Summary

Are you wondering what your role is when it comes to serving the family caregivers of your clients? Research shows that family caregivers have a significant impact on the recipients of their care. They are an important member of the care team and supporting them can lead to improved outcomes for the clients that we serve. We will define the family caregiver and discuss changing roles. We will also share research showing the importance of supporting family caregivers and their influence on care recipients. Assessing caregivers' support needs will be reviewed as well as how to respond to caregiver resistance. National and community resources to help support caregivers will be shared and the referral process will be reviewed. We will conclude with specific tools to use to help caregivers identify self-care needs as well as a case study review and discussion.

About the Speakers: Therese Paul and Theresa Niewiadomski

Therese is a health professional with broad-based experience coordinating nutrition and behavior change therapies into the wellness programs of adults and pediatric clients. As a health coach with experience in motivational interviewing and mindfulness-based intervention, she motivates clients to drive success and encourage self-management of their personal wellness goals. As an expert writer and public speaker, Therese creates and implements classes, workshops, webinars and trainings for college courses, wellness retreats and various organizations, including the American Heart Association, ComPsych Corportation, and the Area Agency on Aging (AAA). She is currently a wellness coach and owner of Define Health, an advocacy program based of Denver, as well as an adjunct faculty member of the Community College of Denver.

Theresa is the Family Caregiver Support Specialist for Direction Home, Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities, where she has worked for 18 years. She is a Licensed Social Worker with more than 25 years of experience in the social service field, as well as a Certified Caregiver Consultant. Driven by her passion for the geriatric population and their caregivers, Theresa has concentrated over half of her career assisting this population. She has helped 100's of caregivers one on one over the phone or by email and has connected with numerous community resources such as The Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson's Association, Probate Court, Vantage Aging, and The Oak Clinic for Multiple Sclerosis. Theresa has successfully facilitated Virtual and in person support groups since 2020, and she is proud to promote the mission of Direction Home which aligns with her passion to provide older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers long term care choices and consumer protection so they can achieve the highest quality of life.

REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION INFORMATION:

Class sizes are limited, so register early.  Classes with low registrations may be canceled.  If the class is canceled or moved, participants will be contacted via email at least 24 hours in advance.

Classes start and end on time.  To ensure a quality experience for all, please arrive (in-person) at least 15 minutes prior to the class start time.  

SOCIAL WORKERS: CEU credits will be adjusted 0.25 credit hours for every 15 minutes not in attendance; adjusted certificates will be emailed to participants within 3 business days after the training.  LICENSED NURSING HOME ADMINISTRATORS: full participation is expected, no partial credit will be awarded. Hard copies of certificates will be mailed upon request.

Refunds will be make ONLY for cancellations received three business days prior to the event. If received less than three days prior to the event, a credit can be issued for use at another program within the next 6 months. If notice of cancellation is not received before the date of the program, no refund will be issued. PLEASE NOTE: No show will be charged the full registration fee.

It is difficult to control room temperature to everyone's comfort level.  We suggest you dress in layers that can be adaptable to warm and cool temperatures.

For auditing purposes, arrival and departure times and signature are required on attendance sheets.
