Social Service Professionals and paraprofessionals face many ethical dilemmas in the electronic age. This course will examine the risks and appropriate use of electronic mediums for personal and professional use - from email to social media. We will explore real-life examples of professional misconduct, boundary violations, and confidentiality breaches, with a focus on state and national ethics standards for social service professionals.   

Objectives:

  • Understand the implications of boundary violations and unprofessional conduct related to the use of social media
  • Recognize risks of confidentiality breaches in both personal and professional use of electronic platforms
  • Identify tools and decision-trees to minimize ethical risk
  • Understand the impact of employer rights related to employee behavior online

The goal of this workshop is to help supervisors in the social service fields identify skills and inverventions that server to promote supervisee growth along all stages of professional development. Participants will gain familiarity with general supervisory principles as well as phase-specific considerations to help foster development of the novice student to the senior professional, including attention to licentusre gatekeeping. Pop culture references from television shows will be used to help illustrate points.

Objectives:

  • Identify primary sources of learning for social service professionals
  • Recognize six general supervisory principles
  • Understand the five phases of social service development and the developmental tasks of each phase, from novice student to senior professional
  • Able to identify supervision considerations based on supervisee phase of development
  • Understand licensure gatekeeping and the purpose of identifying advance practice

About the Speaker: Stacy Simera, MSSA, LISW-S

Stacy is a licensed independent social worker, psychotherapist, and substance abuse professional with over thirty years of experience across the medical and social work fields. With a Masters of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University, she is an accomplished advocate for national education and community groups such as the Ohio Adolescent Health Partnership and the Ohio NASW Board of Directors, where she served as a regional director. She was awarded the 2014 Social Worker of the Year award, both regionally and statewide, and received the Letter of Honor for Tremendous Attainment from the Ohio Senate in the same year. She continues to inspire and educate the next generation of social workers, running CEUs and teaching classes across the state. She currently chairs for the national non-profit Start School Later and is a psychotherapist for Kent Psychological Associates.

REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION INFORMATION:

Class sizes are limited, so register early.  Classes with low registrations may be canceled.  If the class is canceled or moved, participants will be contacted via email at least 24 hours in advance.

Classes start and end on time.  To ensure a quality experience for all, please arrive (in-person) at least 15 minutes prior to the class start time.  

SOCIAL WORKERS: CEU credits will be adjusted 0.25 credit hours for every 15 minutes not in attendance; adjusted certificates will be emailed to participants within 3 business days after the training.  LICENSED NURSING HOME ADMINISTRATORS: full participation is expected, no partial credit will be awarded. Hard copies of certificates will be mailed upon request.

Refunds will be make ONLY for cancellations received three business days prior to the event. If received less than three days prior to the event, a credit can be issued for use at another program within the next 6 months. If notice of cancellation is not received before the date of the program, no refund will be issued. PLEASE NOTE: No show will be charged the full registration fee.

It is difficult to control room temperature to everyone's comfort level.  We suggest you dress in layers that can be adaptable to warm and cool temperatures.
