Legalization of marijuana in Ohio and debate about how to implement the laws has brought swift and often confusing changes to the landscape of cannabis use. Increasing social acceptance and advocacy for marijuana use is often in conflict with information about the downsides and danger of use. This training seeks to inform participants about the current status of recreational and medical marijuana, interpret the current laws, and discuss debates about possible changes to the control of the substance. Information will be provided about the effects of marijuana on the user both short and long term, how addiction manifests through use of marijuana - comparing and contrasting to other drugs of abuse. It includes discussion of trends in use and the impacts on both youth and older adults. Emerging research about cannabis is discussed including difficulties and barriers in conducting research. Additional issues about cannabis derivatives are discussed including CBD products, Edibles, and Delta-8 products.

Objectives:

  • Interpret current Ohio laws about medical and recreational marijuana
  • Understand how marijuana affects the brain and body both short term and long term
  • Learn about historical and current trends in use
  • Learn how marijuana addiction manifests, and the impact on different demographics including teens and older adults
  • Gain awareness of issues surrounding cannabis derivatives, including CBD products, edibles, and Delta-8 products

Caring has a cost. Those in helping professions often are at higher risk for developing secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue and burnout. This training helps participants gain awareness of how working with others who have multiple needs can impact their own health. It includes a discussion of the role of mirror neurons in creating emotional contagion that contribute to both burnout and resilience. Participants will learn knowledge and applicable skills to prevent burnout that go beyond self-care to developing both personal and professional resiliency. An opportunity will be provided to develop a Personal Resiliency and Self-Care plan to apply these skills immediately.

Objectives:

  • Review definitions and impacts of trauma
  • Define secondary stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout
  • Identify signs of secondary stress and burnout in professionals in the helping field, and gain awareness of personal signs and stressors
  • Understand how mirror neurons in the brain create emotional contagion that contributes to both secondary stress and to resilience
  • Learn knowledge and skills to prevent symptoms of compassion fatigue through developing and enhancing resiliency
  • Create a professional resiliency and self-care plan that can be utilized in both professional practices and personal life.
