Health Wealth Wellness & Disease Prevention
Direction Home Akron Canton offers a variety of proactive Health Wealth classes that are designed to keep aging individuals healthier longer. How? By teaching them how to better manage their current diseases and symptoms. Health Wealth offers innovative, evidence-based disease prevention/health promotion education with curriculums developed by a team of physicians, biologists, public health researchers and educators.
All programs are FREE and open to the public. Take a look at our available programs:
Chronic Disease Self-Management (CDSMP)
CDSMP is a series of six (2-1/2 hour) workshops designed to help adults of any age gain confidence in their ability to manage symptoms and understand how their health problems affect their lives. Chronic diseases include but are not limited to: arthritis, hypertension, lung disease and heart disease.
Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)
DEEP is a series of six (2 1/2 hour) workshops designed to help those with types 1 or 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes manage and decrease their symptoms. Participants will learn techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, appropriate exercise for maintaining strength and endurance, healthy eating habits, appropriate use of medication, and effective communication efforts with their healthcare providers.
Diabetes Self-Management (DSM)
DSM is a program that builds on the successful structure of the CDSMP program, but is tailored specifically to adults living with type 2 diabetes. This program is conducted in a series of six (2-1/2 hour) weekly workshops at locations within your community.
Matter of Balance (MOB)
MOB is an interactive education program that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls as controllable, set realistic goals, change their environment to reduce risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. MOB is a four-week program.
Tai Chi-Moving for Better Balance
The Tai Chi program offered by Direction Home Akron Canton is an education and exercise program that aims to strengthen muscles and prevent falls. The exercises are easy to complete and can be done from a sitting or standing position. This program meets two times a week for 12 weeks.
